It is F-mount and allows a macro lens to be used with with the bellows. I modified mine with a longer brass rod for the Nikon slide holder to enable longer macro lenses. Macro can be accomplished by manual focus fairly easily. True. However, if you want to do automated focus shifting (Nikon's term for focus bracketing), the lens has to auto focus.

I am not sold on a new lens fixing this issue, but was wondering how many of you have upgraded from the F mount and noticed a big difference in image quality (whether for reproduction work or not). Both of those lenses performed very well on the Nikon Df and the D700. The 28-85 being just a bit sharper than the 35-135 in similar focal lengths and apertures. There is even a macro mode at 35mm. Press the silver button on the side of the lens and twist to put it into macro mode.
