The CAPS pump is similar to the VP-44 in a few ways, it is sensitive to fuel quanity, quality, temperature, and it is rotary. It does however use oil to lubricate the two pistons that do the pumping, however, the rotor is subjected to fuel volume and quanity for it's cooling and lubrication. At some point, I had my 08 Dodge 6.7L Cummins water pump fail, and was forced to replace it with an enclosed pump, as the parts store had nothing else. That unit failed in 100 miles (crappy cheap aftermarket pump). When Dodge did warranty work on the truck - due to failing block mounted pump - they got REAL cheap and removed the pump and put a replacement pump inside the fuel tank (making it more difficult to fix!).
